Kerala has a reputation for being one of India’s most beautiful and relaxed states – think palm-lined backwaters, quiet beaches, lush hills and some of the best food we’ve eaten. But before we went, we still had a lot of practical questions: when’s the best time to visit, how easy is it to get around, is it safe, and what’s actually different from travelling elsewhere in India?
Many travellers told us that India is magical, but also overwhelming and crazy at times. Zooming rickshaws, traffic noise, heavy crowds and packed trains. Not sure we were ready for the intense, heady-side of India, we researched the south to find a “soft India” trip for our first foray into this beautiful and chaotic country.
We settled on Kerala.
After five amazing (and tiring) days on safari in Tanzania — exploring Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti — we flew straight from Kilimanjaro Airport to Zanzibar. What followed was six blissful nights of white sand, warm breezes and slow mornings in Jambiani and a short stop in historic Stone Town.
When I first started planning our Tanzania safari, I had no idea just how much prices could vary. I assumed I’d get a few quotes, compare them, and pick the best one. But wow — the range in costs was huge.

Our 5-day safari through Tanzania felt like stepping into a dream. Tanzania’s northern circuit is home to baobab forests scattered with elephants, Serengeti plains rippling with migrating herds, and misty crater rims where lions prowl in lush grass. We journeyed from the foothills of Arusha through Tarangire’s elephant country, to the boundless Serengeti and the mythical Ngorongoro Crater.
