Ljubljana City Guide

Ljubljana is Slovenia’s charming capital city. It’s known for its picturesque riverside, vibrant culture, and green spaces. Whether you are taking in historic sites like Ljubljana Castle or enjoying a glass (or bottle) of Slovenian wine along the riverbanks, the city is walkable, lively and brimming with delightful experiences.

If you’re coming to Slovenia to visit Lake Bled or hike the Juliana Trail, I’d highly recommend you spend at least one whole day in Ljubljana first. Ljubljana is just a small city, making it perfect for a short stay.

Things To Do in Ljubljana

Explore the Riverside

Ljubljana’s riverfront is central to the city’s charm. Whether it’s morning or night, walking along the river offers vibrant scenes of cafés, bars, and historic architecture. The river is lined with buzzing cafés, perfect for sipping wine or coffee while people-watching. Vibrant and welcoming, some places offer live Slovenian folk music and accordion performances. Step back from the riverside to explore quieter, hidden spots where you can find unique dining experiences and bars tucked away from the crowds.

Dragon Bridge: This iconic bridge, adorned with dragon statues, offers a great introduction to Ljubljana’s mythical and artistic side. It is a perfect first stop as you venture further into the city.

Triple Bridge: Another must-see is the Triple Bridge, an architectural beauty that connects the city’s central square. It’s often filled with street performers and offers stunning views of Ljubljana Castle from the riverside.

Cafe Crawl: Our favourite activity in Ljubljana was our own self-made tour of the best cafes, coffee houses and sweet treats in the city. Ljubljana is full of bakeries and patisseries and the sweet treats in the city are delicious. Start with Cafétino for coffee, followed by a visit to Butik lePotica for traditional Slovenian pastries. More of our favourites are listed later!

Ljubljana Castle

Walk or Funicular: The short 15-minute walk up to Ljubljana Castle is worth the effort for the panoramic views of the city. Alternatively, take the funicular for a more relaxed ascent.

What to See at the Castle: You can explore many parts of the castle for free, but tickets are required for specific exhibitions like the puppetry museum or clock tower. Even without paying, there’s plenty to enjoy, including the castle grounds, viewpoints, and a wine bar and jazz club inside the castle walls.

Museum of Modern Art

Art enthusiasts will appreciate the Museum of Modern Art, which houses a collection of works by both local and international artists. Expect exhibitions that reflect Slovenia’s contemporary art scene, with thoughtful installations and temporary displays, such as exhibitions focused on Palestine. There’s a good coffee shop called moderna in the basement.

Tivoli Park

Tivoli Park is one of Ljubljana’s largest parks. It’s a peaceful retreat with lovely walking paths, ideal for relaxing after exploring the city. It’s perfect for sunny days, offering shade and quiet spaces for a serene escape.

Best Cafes & Bakeries in Ljubljana

Kavarna Specialka by GOAT STORY – Located along the river, this café offers wonderful cinnamon buns and a scenic balcony to enjoy coffee while taking in views of the city. The cafe is inside the Education Centre which you enter from the back, not the riverside.

Cafétino – Whilst hipster coffee spots are starting to pop-up in the city, Cafetino has the feel of a classical coffee house. Expect cabinets of coffee beans and a moody, dark wood atmosphere.

Butik lePotica – Potica is a traditional Slovenian sweet bread that’s closer to a cake. The best place to try one is Butik lePotica. They bake small versions of what is usually a large cake with a hole in the middle. Walnut potica is the classic but many other flavours are on offer.

Brot Pekarna – Fresh sourdough bread, quiches, croissants and cruffins are on offer at this great little bakery. Seating is limited, so be prepared to takeaway.

Osem Bakery – A simple but delicious selection of fresh baked goods are invitingly laid out at the counter in front of the active bakery. The pistachio danish is a must-try.

Best Places to Eat in Ljubljana

Raw Pasta – Many Italians have moved from neighbouring Italy and now make excellent pasta in Slovenia. Raw Pasta is a cosy spot with mostly outdoor seating. Enjoy handmade pasta dishes, but be prepared for a short wait, as this place is popular.

Patrón Tacos & Bar – Hip tacos and a draft lager on the outside benches are the name of the game at this casual and upbeat Mexican restaurant.

Best Places to Drink in Ljubljana

If you love being in the midst of it all, Ljubljana’s riversides are lined with bars. However, many of our favourites were hidden gems dotted in quieter spots in the city.

Kletvica Natural Wine Bar – Tucked away just a stone’s throw from Raw Pasta, this initially unassuming wine bar opens up onto a large back patio. It was newly opened when we visited but already a popular spot with locals. The staff are friendly and keen to recommend you wine based on your tastes.

Movia Wines –  This renowned wine bar is perfect for trying local Slovenian wines. If you’re a wine lover, make sure to visit. For a more intimate setting, try one of the quieter bars located at the far end of the river. They offer a more laid-back atmosphere, ideal for winding down after a day of sightseeing.

Where To Stay in Ljubljana

April1550 Boutique Hotel – A quiet and charming hotel tucked away on a winding backstreet beneath the walk up to the castle.

Lesar Hotel Angel – This luxurious 4-star hotel is in the heart of the city, close to the river. If quiet luxury is your vibe, this is the hotel for you.

Travel to Lake Bled from Ljubljana

Lake Bled is Slovenia’s biggest highlight and with good reason. This beautiful lake it just an hour’s drive from Ljubljana. It’s possible as a day trip though we’d recommend spending at least a night by the lake.

Public Bus to Lake Bled – The best way to get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled is by bus from Ljubljana bus station. The ride takes just over an hour. Buses depart every four hours, so check the timetable ahead of time. You can book tickets in advance at the bus station.

Private Transfer to Lake Bled If you only have a day, Get Your Guide offers day-trips from Ljubljana to Lake Bled with private transfers.
