Where to Stay in Lindos, Rhodes: Best Areas and Hotels

Lindos is small, but “staying in Lindos” can mean five quite different things — and the difference between them matters more here than in most places, because the village is car-free, built on a hill, and the big hotels are not actually inside it.

Why There Are No Big Hotels in Lindos Village

Lindos is a protected traditional settlement, so development inside the village is heavily restricted. That is why the village is so pretty — and it means the accommodation inside the village is small: restored captains’ houses, boutique places of a dozen or so rooms, and cosy apartments.

Every large resort hotel with a pool deck and a sea view is on one of the bays outside of Lindos. These resorts, named things like Lindos White and Lindos Princess are not actually in Lindos. If you have seen a photograph of a Lindos hotel with an infinity pool over the water, it is almost certainly at Vlicha Bay rather than in Lindos itself.

Lindos Village (The Old Town)

Staying in the village puts you in the middle of the whitewashed lanes, a few minutes from thirty-odd restaurants and the walk up to the Acropolis. In the evening, when the lamps come on and the rooftop terraces fill, it is the best address in Lindos, and the most convenient base for the best things to do in Lindos.

The Trade-Offs: The village is pedestrianised, so taxis drop at a designated point and you walk in with your luggage over cobbles. There are steps everywhere. The main walking route is busy through the middle of the day and lined with shops, so a room near it is not a quiet room. Most properties won’t have a pool due to lack of space.

Best For: Couples, short stays, anyone who wants to walk everywhere and does not mind stairs.

Look At: Melenos Lindos for the luxury end, plus the various restored houses and small guesthouses in the lanes.

The Back of Town

This is where we stayed, and would pick again. The back of Lindos climbs away from the main drag towards rocky outcrops full of mountain goats you can see from the pool. You cannot hear the road, there are no crowds, and the small adults-only hotels are concentrated here.

We stayed at Caesar’s Gardens Hotel and Spa and would highly recommend it. The 16-room adults-only boutique hotel has whitewashed buildings, shaded wooden seating, olive, lime and pomegranate trees, rosemary, a pool and a jacuzzi. Breakfast was included and cooked fresh to order — Greek yoghurt with honey, walnuts and cinnamon, fresh orange juice, proper coffee and egg dishes.

Our room looked over the gardens with the Acropolis and the sea in the distance. There are also a couple of bungalows with private plunge pools at a higher price point, which have a distinctly honeymoon feel.

The Trade-Offs: It is 15 minutes’ walk into the old town and about 30 minutes down to Lindos Beach. Both are perfectly manageable but need timing around the heat. In the high thirties, we took a €7 taxi more than once rather than walk it at midday.

Best For: Couples who want quiet, a pool, something romantic and not too crowded, and still want to walk to dinner.

Vlicha Bay

About 2km north of the village, Vlicha is where the large sea-view hotels are. Wide sandy bay, shallow water, sun beds, and the sort of hotel that has several pools, a spa and a couple of restaurants on site. The view back towards the Acropolis headland is excellent.

The Trade-Offs: You are not walking into Lindos village from here. You’ll need a taxi or a shuttle, and that changes the shape of your evenings. Some of these hotels are large enough that you may not leave them much, which is fine if that is the plan and frustrating if it is not.

Best For: Resort facilities, families who want a pool complex, anyone who wants a sea-view balcony.

Look At: Lindos Mare for a larger sea-view option.

Pefkos

Four kilometres south of Lindos, Pefkos is the value option and a different holiday. It is a proper little resort village with a long sandy beach, a strip of bars and tavernas, and considerably more affordable accommodation than Lindos itself. It is also flat, which after a few days of Lindos steps is not nothing.

The Trade-Offs: It has none of Lindos’s looks. This is modern low-rise resort area rather than whitewashed heritage village. You will be getting a taxi or bus into Lindos for the Acropolis and the rooftop dinners.

Best For: Budget, groups, anyone who wants bars in walking distance.

Kalathos and Lardos

Further out again — Kalathos a few kilometres north, Lardos to the south — and both are about long, quiet beaches rather than village atmosphere. This is villa territory, and where you will find the most space for the money.

The Trade-Offs: You need a car. Without one you are dependent on taxis for everything, which adds up quickly across a week.

Best For: Families, villa holidays, anyone hiring a car and planning to explore the island.

A Note for Wind Sports Travellers

If you are coming to Rhodes primarily to kitesurf or windsurf, do not base yourself in Lindos. The good conditions are at the southern tip in Prasonisi, roughly 90 minutes away, and there are a handful of guesthouses right at the spot. Lindos works for one day trip, not for daily sessions. When to Book

Lindos has a small amount of accommodation and a long peak season, so July and August book out early. We booked about four weeks in advance for our August holiday.
