Chamonix Skiing: A 3-Day Escape to the French Alps

Chamonix skiing is renowned the world over — and for good reason. Nestled beneath the towering peak of Mont Blanc, this legendary resort blends world-class slopes with a distinctly French flair. Whether you’re carving through fresh powder, indulging in hearty Savoyard cuisine, or unwinding in a steaming spa as snowflakes drift down, Chamonix delivers an unforgettable ski experience.

Here’s how to make the most of a three day winter escape in the heart of the French Alps.

Day 1: Arrival & Warm-Up Skiing at Plaine-Joux

Morning: Touchdown in Geneva & the Drive to Chamonix

The gateway to Chamonix, Geneva Airport is just over an hour’s drive from the resort — a scenic journey that sweeps past snow-dusted pines and dramatic peaks. Unlike many purpose-built ski resorts, Chamonix’s slopes are spread out, so hiring a car is the best way to navigate between them.

Our own rental car — a Renault Clio from Alamo — came in at a sobering £410 for four days (excluding petrol and tolls). Budget-conscious travellers may prefer the FlixBus, but those relying on public transport should book accommodation within easy reach of a ski lift.

Afternoon: Skiing at Domaine Skiable de Plaine-Joux

Perched in nearby Passy, this family-friendly ski area offers the perfect introduction to Chamonix’s terrain. Its gentle pistes and breathtaking views of Mont Blanc make it an ideal warm-up spot, whether you’re a beginner or just easing into the conditions.

A day on the slopes is best rounded off with a Viennese coffee or a steaming vin chaud (hot wine) at one of the cosy slope-side restaurants — an essential first taste of Alpine hospitality.

Ski Hire: Cyprien Sports Skimium

For rental gear, we opted for Cyprien Sports Skimium in Les Houches and found their service both professional and welcoming. There are also ski hire options directly at Plaine-Joux.

Day 2: Exploring Les Houches & Saint-Gervais

For intermediate skiers, Les Houches and Saint-Gervais offer some of the most rewarding runs in the region. The pistes are beautifully groomed, winding through pine forests with stunning vistas of Mont Blanc at every turn.

This area caters to all abilities, with a well-designed nursery slope for first-timers, sweeping blues for relaxed cruising, and more demanding black runs for those craving a challenge — including the formidable Kandahar, a World Cup downhill course.

On a clear blue day, it’s hard to imagine a more picturesque setting for a day’s skiing.

Day 3: La Flégère & Après at Le Petit Social

Morning & Afternoon: Skiing at La Flégère

One of Chamonix’s premier ski areas, La Flégère is a must-visit for those in search of pulse-raising slopes and exhilarating off-piste terrain. While competent skiers will relish its varied runs, beginners may find its challenges daunting. That said, the panoramic views alone make it worth the trip, even for non-skiers — who can explore the marked raquette (snowshoe) trails for a taste of the high-altitude wilderness.

Après-Ski: Drinks at Le Petit Social

No ski trip is complete without a celebratory après-ski and Le Petit Social is the perfect spot. Intimate yet lively, this charming bar is a favourite among those in the know, serving up excellent drinks and a convivial atmosphere to toast the end of a spectacular ski weekend.
