I just left a long comment about everything but just not going to repeat all of that. These comments are from tourist season so that is normal of course. Generally, it is laid back and natural. lots of nature. jump shuttles to other places from here. Plenty of food stores, regular grocery stores, some specialty stores Packa used items all over and super cheap….all degrees of quality and value Medical available. Outdoor market. Boats to other villages daily. Kites with seat for 2 to fly over lake etc. Depending on when you are here there can be days of fireworks going off. Party noise if you are next to a bar…I come for 3-6 months each time and never had a problem with that. although some people will play their boom boxes with hellish sounds, sometimes a real nucense but that is pretty much anywhere in these parts. Part of the culture. Why I like it: peaceful, nature, close to water, friendly people, native mayan clothes worn. Cheap. No need for car as you can walk everywhere but tuk tuks available for cheap….less than a dollar each. Best way to understand Pana is to visit, of course….Home of Lake Atitlan and the volcanoes. I wake up in the morning go to the kitchen and from my window I see tons of beautiful flowers, Trees, grass so soft like walking on marshmallows. and a big volcano right out my window…! I rent a small house on a property of 5 units and very beautiful, way off the road, quiet and private. Cost $475. a month all inclusive one bedroom furnished. You only pay for gas for cooking.and drinking water if you want to buy from here, otherwise the stores. better right here.

You travel with your mum? This place is quiet and relaxed compared to most Latin American towns I have been to !

Thanks for sharing your insights from Panajachel! I am researching and planning my travels there for later this year and this is really helpful to know. I will definitely make a point to explore Panajachel in the morning. I love calm atmosphere!

In reply to Jo. So crazy!! I've heard that it's not so bad when it's not Semama Santa, and wish I'd had the opportunity to see it otherwise. Though apparently Panajachel is often that noisy and crowded. Ahh, such a shame to hear about the heavy drinking on the Guatemalans there! I liked San Pedro, it was chilled, but I was only there briefly! When were you there, Jo?

God, I can imagine Atitlan would be crazy then. We stayed with insanely rich Guatemalan friends there, and all their friends had lake houses and often (drunkenly, unfortunately) drove or boated into Pana and San Pedro. We were there just before SS and they all had plans to show up there for the holidays.

When we were in Pana a few weeks before that, it was a chilled out hippy town with barely anyone and no real partying! It’s crazy how much a place can change!
