I lived in San Pedro de la Laguna for 2 months and I loved the place. Lake Atitlan is just beautiful. I think the coast is nice but in my opinion, the highlights are Atitlan, Antigua and Tikal… well, and the hike to Acatenango volcano.. that was pretty crazy!

Thanks, Brittany! I wanted to cover as much ground as possible so that it would be really useful. Yes, I think that being cautious and responsible is the best way to stay safe. Be informed about safety issues, but don’t panic about them, that’s my best advice!

Great guide, very comprehensive! I remember being really scared of getting robbed or worse in Guatemala (and in Central America in general). Sometimes on buses we would even padlock our bags to the luggage racks above the seats. I’m not sure that really would have accomplished much if we HAD been held up, but fortunately it never happened. I think taking the normal precautions and not panicking is sound advice.
