Hi Wendy! I can imagine that it’s different for Brits and Americans, because us British don’t really have Mexican food and culture in the same way that Americans do. I mean, we have tacos, fajitas etc in the UK but I didn’t really know what local Mexicans ate on a day-to-day basis.

Such a shame about Tulum for you, and those mosquito bites sound horrible! We weren’t that impressed with the beach area, but we really love the town and have been having a great time in an Airbnb casita in a very local part of town. It’s much easier here because the touristy bars are set back a bit and the economical canteen style food places are closer to us.

It’s so interesting to read this and see Mexico from a British perspective. As insular as Americans are, that’s the one country we do grow up knowing something about, so it’s hard for me to imagine not knowing what Mexican food is like.
That’s not to say I knew it all before I arrived in the country, though. Tulum still ranks as one of my biggest travel disappointments of all time. Like you, I was shocked by the prices, so we ended up in the most dilapidated beach shack you can imagine. There were huge gaps in the sticks that were our “walls”, and I woke up covered in literally hundreds of mosquito bites!
