Aruba is a Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela. I’d never heard of the little Dutch-owned island of Aruba until just recently – but though it’s unbeknown to many of us Brits, it’s a popular holiday destination Dutch and for American couples and honeymooners. The island has year-round sunshine, turquoise seas, colonial Dutch architecture and a Latin vibe. Aruba sounds great, right?
San Miguel de Allende is the prettiest city in Mexico.
It’s a small colonial city with UNESCO World Heritage Site status. San Miguel de Allende sits to the northwest of Mexico City in the Bajio mountains. After a month of living in Mexico City, San Miguel was the next stop on our Mexico travel route.
Baja California is the edge of the world: one of the western-most stretches of land before the endless Pacific Ocean. Orange and pink rock formations overlook azure waters from beneath a searing sky. La Paz, a beach town in Baja California Sur in Mexico, is popular with visitors due to its year-round summer and proximity to the Sea of Cortez.
The Sea of Cortez is famous for being home to a staggering third of the world’s marine animals: whales, dolphins and sea lions thrive in the sheltered stretch of water between Baja California and mainland Mexico. To add to the appeal, otherworldly rock formations such as Isla Espiritu Santo, hide a thousand seldom-visited beaches and coves.
Iceland is a country for adventures. Waterfalls, glaciers, hiking, fjords, whale watching — Iceland is awash with incredible activities for nature lovers and adventurers. On my first trip to Iceland many years ago, I saw some breath-taking sights and have always wanted to explore more of this Nordic country.
Portland has been on our must-visit list since forever. We heard it was a hipster mecca with an exploding vegetarian and vegan scene way back and its green credentials and continued commitment to sustainability made us even more excited to get to see the city for ourselves.
I used to be a fair weather hiker. I only wanted to hike when I knew it wouldn’t rain or get too cold, when I knew I wouldn’t get too muddy, when I knew I’d be able to get a good view from where I was headed.
All that changed when I started travelling. I realised that if you wait for the perfect hiking conditions, you’ll never go hiking at all. When you’re travelling, you only have a limited time in each place and you have to make that time count.
Being vegetarian in Mexico City was a breeze. Mexico City is one of the most vegetarian-friendly cities in Mexico. We found travelling vegan in Mexico quite challenging, but Mexico City was a breath of fresh air when it came to finding good vegan and vegetarian food options.
The thing we did struggle with in Mexico City was finding ‘local’ and ‘authentic’ style Mexican food. The local cuisine is notoriously meaty, which made it difficult when hunting for vegetarian-friendly options more generally. What with Mexico City being metropolitan, most of the food that was vegetarian in Mexico City was also foreign cuisine.
What is great about Mexico City is the burgeoning vegan food scene and the amount of vegetarian options already available in the city. The best thing to do as a vegetarian in Mexico City is to get out there, explore and eat some more!

Backpacking the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico is an incredible experience. From white sand beaches and swimming with whale sharks to the ruins of Chichen Itza and watching Mayan ball games, there is a lot for a backpacker to do in one trip.
While backpacking the Yucatan peninsula offers an out-of-this-world travel experience, it’s worth noting that it costs more to travel here than it would to backpack in Vietnam, Thailand or other Asian countries.
The Yucatan is also much more expensive than central Mexico. But backpacking the Yucatan can be done on a budget and it’s well worth it if you ask us.
