I’m thinking of visiting in July, however I am concerned about the weather as I have heard it’s not a good time to be in the Yucatan (lots of rain and humid) Can I ask what month you visited in and what your experience was? Thanks!

Hey Tim – Thanks for your comment. What are the places in the city of Valladolid you would recommend that we missed? We’re always keen to hear about more. We ate at a different restaurant, locally recommended, during our stay but didn’t have much luck with good cuisine there.

You stayed a whole week and the Cafe Bike shop was the only place worth going to? There are dozens and dozens of places worth going to here. Its probably the coolest city in the entire peninsula next to Merida. Sorry you missed out on so much.

In reply to Rose. Buses and collectivos are SUPER easy to use in the general vicinity. Collectivos are great for getting around to tinier towns. There is almost nowhere you can't get to by collectivo. The buses are very comfy. Both are ridiculously inexpensive. My understanding is that cars are a safer bet than one might imagine, but with the buses and collectivos being so cheap and easy, the potential problems don't always make it worth it for everyone.

I am guessing that you are not using a car. So how are you moving about as easily from there? Did you find good bus connections or are some car rentals worth your trust?

In reply to Manuel de Jesus. Hey Manuel, well we did get vegetarian food in Valladolid! You can see from my post that there were lots of options and different foods to try. You can also see that we do eat gluten and are vegetarian, not vegan. We certainly never 'expect' a certain kind of food, especially in Mexico where meat and cheese are very common. But I can still write about what we did eat and the quality of the food ;) I also wouldn't say that "snobby beach resorts" produce good food either in my experience.

vegetarian food… girl you are in a MEXICAN LITTLE TOWN, not a snobby beach resort where 90% are european or american tourists, in towns in rural Mexico, people are not going to be… oh my gosh thats so meaty, thats has gluten, oh my gosh that dish needs to be vegan NO! so dpnt expect traveling into the real Mexico and find vegan restaurants! #firstworldproblems

Thanks for your detailed post. It’s good to see reviews on places to stay and wifi. I got some quesadillas to go from Oasis and it came with a generous serving of shredded raw beets and carrots with sliced tomatoes. About the most vegetables I’ve seen at once in three months in the Yucatan, other than when I buy my own.

If you get back to Valladolid, check out Candelitas. It’s a friendly cafe with organic espresso and a patio right at a park. The eggs Yucatan are scrambled with chaya, the tasty local greens. One of the best breakfasts I’ve had in Mexico, and they have ground organic coffee by the bag.

I enjoyed Casa de Arecas B&B in Merida — the only quiet place — and found a wonderful pizza place downtown.

In reply to Mark and Ju. Hey Mark and Ju. Hope that you make it to Valladolid and find a good Airbnb place there. We didn't drive, we took the bus. We actually went from Tulum to Valladolid as well, rather than direct from Cancun.
