If you want peak autumn colour, visit Boston in the second half of October, when the city’s trees usually reach their best and most vibrant autumnal colours. If you’d rather have warmer weather, smaller crowds and a hint of the season to come, go in September.
I visited in mid-September and thought it was an excellent time to be there. This guide shares my experience of early Autumn in Boston so you can pick the right month and know what to expect.

For most people, mid-to-late October is the classic Boston autumn trip. September suits you if you’d rather have warm weather and don’t mind that the trees are still mostly green with only some orange, and November is worth considering if you prefer lower prices and fewer crowds to peak foliage.
Boston in September: What It Was Like
When I visited in mid-September, it was still mostly hot and a large iced latte seemed to be the drink of choice for almost everyone in the city. The leaves were only just beginning to turn, but the early touches of colour were already beautiful, especially on Beacon Hill and around the Public Garden.
Don’t count on heat, though. September cools noticeably as the month goes on: the average high is around 25°C at the start of the month and closer to 20°C by the end. Pack layers for both warm afternoons and cooler evenings.
September is also the tail end of baseball season, so check the Red Sox schedule if you’d like to see a game at Fenway Park. I loved spending my September days walking between neighbourhoods, and my weekend in Boston itinerary is based on what I did.
Boston in October: Peak Foliage and Busy Weekends
October is Boston’s big autumn month. According to Massachusetts tourism, colour typically peaks in the third week of October, and early reports suggested that 2026 should be a good year. Northern New England turns earlier, so if you’re heading into the mountains, early to mid-October is usually a better bet.
It’s a popular month for events too. The Head of the Charles Regatta, a huge rowing race on the Charles River, takes place from 16 to 18 October 2026. Just north of the city, Salem hosts Haunted Happenings throughout October, with more than a million visitors, so its weekends get extremely busy.
The downsides are crowds and cost. October is among the most expensive months for Boston hotels, and it’s also the wettest of the three autumn months, so bring a waterproof. Book your hotel as early as you can if you’re set on peak foliage.
Boston in November: Quieter and Better Value
November is a shoulder month in Boston, when the crowds thin out and hotel prices often ease. It’s noticeably colder, with average highs around 11°C and most of the leaves have fallen by the middle of the month, although a few trees can hold on into early November.
It’s a good choice if you’re more interested in the city itself than the foliage. Museums, the Freedom Trail, Beacon Hill’s streets and Boston’s bookshops and cafés are all just as enjoyable on a crisp, quiet November day.
Where to See Autumn Colour in Boston
You don’t need to leave the city to see autumn leaves. These are the best spots, starting with the most central.
- The Public Garden and Boston Common: Boston’s two central parks sit side by side and are the easiest place to see colour. I walked through them almost every day, and the first turning trees were already lovely in September.
- Beacon Hill: my favourite part of Boston. Red-brick townhouses, gas lamps and trees turning gold and red make streets like Acorn Street and Louisburg Square even prettier in autumn.
- Commonwealth Avenue Mall: a long, tree-lined walkway running through the middle of Back Bay from the Public Garden, perfect for an autumn stroll.
- The Charles River Esplanade: a riverside park just behind Beacon Hill and Back Bay, with views across the water to Cambridge.
- Arnold Arboretum: Harvard’s huge tree collection in Jamaica Plain is free and open every day from sunrise to sunset. Take the Orange Line to Forest Hills and follow the signs to the Forest Hills Gate.
- Mount Auburn Cemetery: a beautiful historic garden cemetery in Cambridge that’s free to visit. Check its opening hours before you go, as they’re shorter in winter.
- Harvard Yard: the leafy heart of Harvard’s campus, around 15 minutes from Park Street on the Red Line.
Autumn Day Trips from Boston
Salem
Salem is the most popular autumn day trip from Boston, particularly in October. The MBTA Commuter Rail runs from North Station in around 30 minutes (check current fares and times), and at weekends the $10 Weekend Pass gives unlimited Commuter Rail travel. A seasonal ferry also runs from Long Wharf through the end of October. Go early in the day on October weekends, or take a guided Salem day trip if you’d rather someone else handled the logistics.
The White Mountains for Peak Foliage
For the full New England foliage experience, head north into New Hampshire’s White Mountains. You don’t need to hire a car: this fall foliage day tour from Boston includes hotel pick-up, the Kancamagus Highway, two waterfall hikes and lunch in North Conway. It’s a long day of around 11 hours, but it’s the easiest way to see the mountains without driving.
Apple Picking
Apple picking is a classic New England autumn activity, but most orchards need a car. The closest car-free option is to take the Commuter Rail to Ipswich and a taxi from the station to Russell Orchards, which is known for its cider doughnuts. It’s about 2.6 miles from the station.
Where to Stay in Boston in the Fall
Book as early as you can for October. For an autumn trip, I’d stay in Beacon Hill if the budget allows, so you can walk out into its leafy streets and the Public Garden each morning. FAQ: Boston in the Fall
The Public Garden’s Swan Boats do not run in the autumn. Their season finishes around Labor Day in early September, and in 2026 the last rides were on 7 September. They return in spring, and 2027 will be their 150th season.
You don’t need a car to enjoy autumn colour in Boston itself, as the parks, Beacon Hill and the Arnold Arboretum are all reachable on foot or by the T. A car is only useful for exploring the mountains of northern New England, and even then a guided day tour from Boston is an easy alternative.
Pack layers for Boston in October, as days can be mild while mornings and evenings are much cooler. A warm jumper, a waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes will cover most days, with a light scarf for the cooler evenings later in the month.
